Curated stack

One car open at a time

The shortlist stays thin. Whichever car you open swells into its full file, and the others fold away.

A gateway before it is a destination

Most people who land here are not visiting Kutaisi. They are using it, because this is the cheapest door into western Georgia and because almost everything they came for sits north, east and west of the runway rather than beside it. The canyons, the cave systems above Tsqaltubo, the monastery hill at Gelati and the long climb towards Svaneti all begin with the same decision: what you drive out of the car park in.

A low cost airport also produces a particular kind of arrival. A lot of passengers come off one aircraft at the same moment, walk towards the same few desks, and want to be moving rather than queueing. Booking before you fly turns that whole scene into a signature and a key. Car Hire Kutaisi lists the live local board, so the grid above this paragraph is what is genuinely free on your dates, not a brochure.

Prices reflect the same logic. The cheap end of the board starts at about EUR 25 a day and the whole first page of results stays inside a narrow band, which means money is rarely what decides it. What decides it is the road you have in mind.

What a day actually costs

Cheapest on the board
about EUR 25 a day
Lower quarter of the board
at or under EUR 28
Middle of the board
close to EUR 30
Top of the first page
about EUR 34

Rates move through the day as cars are taken and returned. The search grid is the authority here, not this panel.

From search box to steering wheel

Five stages, and only one of them happens after you land.

  1. Choose

Set your dates in the panel at the top of this page. The grid reloads against the live local board, so a car that is already gone never reaches your screen.

  2. Hold

Reserve the car you picked. Not one listing in the sample we checked blocks anything on the card, so your balance stays where it is until you are standing next to the vehicle.

  3. Collect

Nearly every car on the board includes delivery at no extra charge. The handover can happen at the terminal, outside a guesthouse in Tsqaltubo, or in the middle of Kutaisi.

  4. Drive

Before you leave the kerb, find the spare, the jack and the warning triangle, and photograph the wheels. On the roads people rent here for, that check is the one that pays for itself.

  5. Return

Hand the car back where you agreed it. Around six in ten listings can be cancelled for free beforehand, which is the line to look for if your flight home is still provisional.

Why this board is full of Jeeps and Subarus

Scroll the grid for a minute and a pattern appears that you will not find on a coastal board. Roughly half of the first page is SUV or four wheel drive shaped. About one car in four wears a Jeep badge. Roughly one in six is a Subaru. Chevrolet and Toyota take most of what is left, with Hyundai and Mitsubishi filling the gaps.

That is not a styling preference on the part of the suppliers. It is a reading of where their customers actually go. The road up to Mestia, the tracks above Okatse, the crossing towards Bakuriani and most of what passes for a shortcut in Racha are not flat tarmac in good repair. Ground clearance and four wheel drive are the two things renters here ask for by name, so that is what the local fleets bought.

The useful consequence is that the cheap end of this board is not a row of tiny hatchbacks. The Jeep Renegade is the single most common model on it, with the Chevrolet Cruze and the Subaru Forester close behind, and the Hyundai Elantra and Jeep Cherokee not far back. A car that would be the upgrade elsewhere is the default here.

So the choice becomes honest rather than financial. If your plan is the city, the monastery and the cave, a Cruze or an Elantra is more than enough and easier to park. If Svaneti or the far end of the canyon loop is on the list, pay the small difference and take the clearance. Nobody has ever regretted the extra centimetres on a Georgian mountain road.

What comes as standard here

The things renters normally have to check one car at a time, read off the whole board at once.

Item On the board today What it means for you
Card hold Nothing held, across the whole sample You pay the rental and keep the rest of your balance free for the trip.
Transmission A sample of a hundred cars, no manuals Book without reading the gearbox line twice.
Delivery Included on nearly all of them Terminal, hotel or a street address in town, at no extra charge.
Free cancellation Around six in ten listings Filter for it while your dates are still soft, not after.
Condition A few are flagged as newly added The rest is ordinary, well used local stock. Photograph it at handover.

Counts come from a live sample of the local board and shift as cars are booked. Each car page carries its own terms, and those win.

Where the car is actually going

Pick the drive first. The right car follows from it.

Prometheus Cave and Tsqaltubo

The easiest first drive out of Kutaisi, on roads any car on the board will take without complaint. The hard part is the parking, not the driving, so book for comfort rather than clearance.

Plan the cave drive

Okatse and Martvili

Most people string these two together, and the second half of that loop is where a low car starts to scrape. If you want both on the same trip, take something with ground clearance under it.

See the canyon loop

Gelati and Bagrati

Both sit on the city side, so this is the one you do with whatever you happened to book. Parking matters more than the engine, and a smaller car is the easier guest here.

Read the monastery route

The road north to Mestia

This is the long one, and it is the reason the local fleet looks the way it does. Take the four wheel drive, leave early, and treat the day as the drive rather than as a transfer.

Read the Svaneti drive

Borjomi and Bakuriani

East instead of north, and a road that changes character with the season. In winter the clearance earns its keep again, and winter tyres stop being optional.

We took a Forester up to Mestia and back and never once wished for a different car. The handover at the terminal was one phone call and a signature.

Booked a Renegade for the canyons at Martvili. The paperwork was slower than I expected, but nothing was frozen on my card and the price held exactly.

They brought the car to our guesthouse in Tsqaltubo the evening before, which made the early start towards Prometheus Cave completely painless.

Questions people ask before they book

Not for the city itself, the monasteries, or the cave above Tsqaltubo. For the road north to Svaneti, the upper canyon tracks and anything towards Bakuriani in winter, ground clearance and four wheel drive are worth paying for. That demand is exactly why about half of the local board is SUV or four wheel drive shaped.
Not on the cars we sampled. Every listing in a hundred car sample of the Kutaisi board holds nothing on the card, so you pay for the rental and the rest of your balance stays available. Always read the individual car page before you confirm, because suppliers can change their own terms.
Nearly every listing includes delivery at no extra cost, and the terminal is the most common delivery point of all. Set the pickup point while you are booking rather than trying to arrange it after you land, because the driver needs your flight details to time it.
Automatic, in practice. A sample of a hundred listings from the Kutaisi board turned up no manual cars at all, which is unusual for this part of the region. If you specifically want a manual, treat it as a special request rather than something you can filter for.
The cheapest listings sit at about EUR 25 a day, the middle of the board is close to EUR 30, and the top of the first page is around EUR 34. The spread is narrow, so the real decision here is which car suits your road rather than which one saves a few euro.
Around six in ten cars on the board allow free cancellation. If the trip is not locked in yet, choose from those listings first and confirm the cancellation window on the car page, because it differs between suppliers.
