A lit cave, an underground boat, and a drive that asks nothing special of your car.
/ 4 · Nights
Seven moves between breakfast and the car park. Only one of them is driving.
Nearly every listing on the Kutaisi board includes delivery at no extra charge, so the car can be standing outside your guesthouse the evening before. On a trip that is finished by lunch, starting at your own door instead of at a rental desk is most of the time you save.
The route leaves Kutaisi and runs through Tsqaltubo, the old spa town, before the turn towards the cave. There is nothing technical about any of it. The cheapest saloon on the board, at about EUR 25 a day, gets you there exactly as well as the Jeep parked beside it.
You park, walk to the entrance building and buy entry there. This is the moment the trip stops being about the car, so take out of the boot whatever you want with you and leave the rest locked.
Visits go in with a guide rather than one party at a time, so what you are waiting for is the next group forming. It is the part of the morning you cannot plan around, and it is the best argument there is for going early rather than late.
Inside is one lit walkway with handrails, cool air and a great many steps. It runs in a single direction, so there is no short version of it once you are in.
At the far end the boat is an add on rather than part of the standard visit, and it works as an exit: you float out instead of climbing back the way you came. Agree on it with the rest of the car before you buy, because whoever skips it leaves on foot.
You come back up to a car park with most of the day still in front of you and a rental already paid for until tomorrow. This is where the canyons usually get added, and where the car you chose this morning starts to matter.
Five lines read off the live local board, set against what the morning actually needs.
| Line | What the board shows | What it changes for this trip |
|---|---|---|
| Ground clearance | About half of the board is SUV or four wheel drive shaped | None of it is required between town and the cave. Treat the tall half as a preference here, not a purchase. |
| Gearbox | No manual turned up in a sample of a hundred listings | Nothing to filter for, and nothing to think about on a road you have never driven. |
| Card hold | Nothing blocked, across the whole sample | Your balance stays free for tickets, fuel and lunch on the way back. |
| Delivery | Included on nearly every listing | The car can reach you the night before, which is how a half day stays a half day. |
| Daily rate | From about EUR 25, with the middle of the board near EUR 30 | A morning trip still uses a full day of hire, so give the afternoon something to do. |
Counts come from a live sample of the Kutaisi board and move as cars are taken and returned. The terms on each individual car page are the ones that bind.
Delivery is included on nearly all of the listings here, and it is worth more on this trip than on most. The cave is a morning. If that morning opens with a taxi across town to a rental desk, it is not a morning any more. Set the delivery address to wherever you are sleeping and take the keys the evening before.
You leave the car and walk. A short car is the easier guest in an ordinary car park, so this is one of the few drives out of Kutaisi where a Renegade or a Cruze is the better booking than a Cherokee.
Four wheel drive. Roughly half of this board carries it, none of this run needs it, and the money is better kept for the Svaneti road if that is also on your list.
Hire is sold by the day, and the cheap end of this board sits at about EUR 25 with the middle close to EUR 30. The cave will not use that up. Either pair it with the canyons in the afternoon or choose a car you would happily drive back the long way, because you are paying for both halves of the day either way.
Almost everything written about this place describes what is inside it: the lit chambers, the colour thrown onto the rock, the size of the rooms. That is useful while you are still deciding whether to go. It stops being useful the moment you have decided, because from then on the only open questions are when to set off, where to leave the car and what to do with the half of the day you still have afterwards.
The driving answers itself. This is the trip people take on their first morning with a hire car, before they have any feel for Georgian roads, and nothing in it tests the car or the person holding the wheel. The useful consequence is that the booking is free to be decided by something other than capability. Price, boot space and how easily the thing parks are all better reasons here than ground clearance, which is not a sentence that applies to many drives out of Kutaisi.
What does need planning is the group and the afternoon. You go in when a group goes in, so the earlier half of the morning runs calmer than the later half. And because hire is billed by the day rather than by the outing, an empty afternoon is the only real waste on this page. Most people solve both at once by pointing the car west when they come back up the steps.
If the afternoon is going on to the gorges, the car question is answered on the Okatse and Martvili page instead.
The walkway underground is one continuous lit route rather than a loop you can cut short. It is cool, it is damp in places and it climbs and drops a lot of steps. A layer left in the boot is the most commonly forgotten item on this whole trip, because people walk out of a hot car park in a t shirt and then spend the next stretch of the morning underground. Shoes with some grip in them matter more than anything else you could think to bring.
Lighting is the thing the cave is known for, and it is worth knowing in advance that it is theatrical rather than natural. Colour is thrown deliberately onto the formations, which photographs far better than it sounds and which divides people neatly into those who find it magnificent and those who would rather see the rock. Either way, a phone handles it. Nobody needs to carry a camera bag down those steps.
The boat is where the visit earns its reputation. It is sold as an extra rather than included, and it serves as the exit: instead of retracing the walkway, you are floated out along a lit underground channel and come up somewhere other than where you went in. It is short, it is slow, and it is strange in a way that nothing else on a day out of Kutaisi manages. Decide as a car, because the people who skip it walk back and meet the others outside.
What the place is not is a full day, and that is precisely why the hire car matters here. With a car, the cave is a morning and the canyons are an afternoon, and Car Hire Kutaisi lists the board those cars come from, so you can see on your own dates what the pairing actually costs. Without a car it becomes the whole day, and most of that day is spent arranging the travelling rather than looking at anything.
The cave sits beyond Tsqaltubo. The map is here so you can picture the turn before you are at it, not because the route is difficult to follow.

Set your dates, take delivery the night before, and be out through Tsqaltubo while the day is still quiet.
