Curated stack

One car open at a time

The shortlist stays thin. Whichever car you open swells into its full file, and the others fold away.

Five moves that get you out ahead of the aircraft

Low cost flights do not trickle in. One aeroplane empties into one hall and everyone in it wants the same few things in the same ten minutes. Four of these five moves happen before you land.

  1. 1

    Reserve

Pick your dates in the booking panel above and settle the car before you fly. Rates on this board open around EUR 25 a day and barely stretch by the time you reach the bottom of the first page, so booking early buys the shape of car you want rather than a discount.

  2. 2

    Fill in the flight

The flight field is the one worth re-reading before you confirm. A car brought out to the terminal is scheduled against the aircraft, so a late landing carries the handover along with it. If the airline switches you onto a different service, amend the booking that same day instead of explaining it from the car park.

  3. 3

    Meet the car

A counter serves one passenger after another. A booked handover is one person waiting for one person, and nearly every listing on this board includes delivery at no extra charge, which is why most renters here never join a line at all.

  4. 4

    Check it

Do the walk around in the car park rather than at the first petrol station. Photograph both bumpers and every panel, open the boot and look at what is genuinely in there, then look at the tyres. On the roads people hire for in this part of Georgia, the tyres are the part worth looking at twice.

  5. 5

    Drive in

Roughly twenty kilometres of ordinary road separate the terminal from Kutaisi itself. Whatever else is on your list, that stretch is the gentlest driving of the trip, and it is a useful place to get used to a car you have never sat in before.

We came off a completely full aircraft and walked straight past the line. The car was in the car park, the keys took one signature, and we were gone before anyone had reached the front.

Our flight arrived at an hour nobody enjoys and the handover still happened exactly as arranged. The slowest part was me reading the contract by phone torch.

Collected a Forester at the airport and went north the following morning. Nothing at all was blocked on my card, which mattered on a trip already paid for twice over.

Counts come from a live sample of the Kutaisi listings and shift as cars are taken and returned. The terms printed on an individual car page are the ones that actually bind.

Why one flight makes a queue

A hub spreads its passengers across the whole hour. A low cost airport does not, and an arrivals hall is built for the average rather than for the spike.

One aircraft, one hall

Everybody who lands is in the same room within the same few minutes, holding the same short list of things to sort out.

The belt sets the clock

Luggage releases people in a block rather than a trickle, and whatever comes next has to absorb all of them at once.

A handover runs alongside

Nothing about collecting a car you already booked depends on the hall emptying first. It happens in parallel with the queue, not behind it.

The road out is the simple part

Roughly twenty kilometres stand between the terminal and the city, and that is the straightforward half of the morning.

What the car does first

Decide the opening drive. It settles the car far more than the price does.

The short run most people make

This is the default and it asks nothing of the car. Any listing on the board will take you in comfortably, so if the city is where your first night is booked, choose on parking and boot space rather than on clearance.

See the cheaper listings

The long one, and rarely a landing day job

People do collect here and point the car at the mountains, but almost all of them have decided that before they board. It is not a road to meet for the first time at the end of a travel day, and it is the main reason so much of this board sits high off the ground.

Read the Svaneti drive

Batumi, straight off the aircraft

A fair number of arrivals never go into the city at all and head for the Black Sea instead. The car matters less on that run than on the mountain roads, so the thing to confirm is where you are handing it back, because collecting at the airport and returning somewhere else is a question for the supplier before you book.

Close enough to do on arrival day

Tsqaltubo sits on this side of the city, which makes it the one proper outing you can still manage after an awkward landing time. Ordinary cars handle it; it is the parking, not the surface, that tests your patience.

Twenty kilometres, and why they are the easy part

This airport exists because the fares are low, and the fares shape everything that happens after the doors open. Aircraft come in at hours chosen by an operations schedule rather than by anybody who has to be awake for them, they arrive one at a time, and each one delivers a full load of people into a building that spends most of the day nearly empty. There is no steady stream to smooth it out. There is a wave, and then there is quiet.

That rhythm is the whole argument for having the car sorted in advance. Nothing about the hall is badly run; it is simply being asked to serve everyone at once, repeatedly, and whichever queue you pick you are standing in it with the full contents of one aeroplane. A renter who booked beforehand steps out of that arithmetic entirely, because the handover was never part of the queue to begin with.

Then there is the distance. Roughly twenty kilometres lie between the terminal and Kutaisi, and they are undemanding: a normal road, normal traffic, nothing that asks anything of the car or of a driver who has just flown. It is a good warm up, and it is worth treating it as one, because very little else in western Georgia drives like that. The canyon approaches, the climb towards the mountains and most of what people actually book a car here for are a different kind of road altogether.

The practical reading of all this is simple. Car Hire Kutaisi reads the local board live, so the grid near the top of this page is the stock actually open on your dates rather than a showroom of everything the city owns. Pick on the first real drive instead of the transfer into town, because the transfer is the one journey any car on this page can do, and the rest is where the choice matters.

Asked by people flying into Kutaisi

About twenty kilometres, on one straightforward road. There is nothing technical about the drive and nothing on the board that cannot do it, which is why the airport works perfectly well as a collection point even if your first night is in the middle of town.
Settle the return point and the return hour with the supplier while you are booking, not on the night before. Delivery is included on nearly every listing in Kutaisi, and the same arrangement works in reverse, so an early handback is normally a matter of agreeing it in advance rather than finding somebody awake at the time.
Only if you arrive without a booking. A reserved car is one supplier meeting one renter, so the wave that builds up inside the hall never forms behind you. The passengers who wait are the ones deciding what to rent after they have landed, and on a single-wave arrival that decision is made at the back of a long line.
Both are done regularly from here. For the coast almost anything on the board is fine. For Svaneti, take the clearance: about one listing in two here is raised or four wheel drive, and that is no accident, because this is the airport those trips start from. If your flight lands at an odd hour, sleep first and start the mountain road in daylight.
